Yr6 Weekly Update – 05/12/17
How We Express Ourselves
The Exhibition – Week 6
Congratulations to the KJS Tournament of the Minds students who won the tournament last weekend! TOM is a problem solving programme for teams of students from both primary and secondary years. TOM aims to enhance the potential of our youth by developing diverse skills, enterprise, time management, and the discipline to work collaboratively within a competitive environment. Well done KJS Students! Thank you to Mr. Anderson and Ms. Doucette for your help and guidance.
As students are relying heavily on their or school devices during the Exhibition, please remind them they must log off from all of their devices when not using them, especially if it is a shared device with other family members. Mrs. Darling has had a session with the students to discuss this issue and how to change their passwords. Their passwords should no longer be the ones they were given in Y1.
PYPX
Central Idea: Expressing values and passions moves people to take action.
We are inquiring into
- The reasons for our global goals (causation)
- Local connections to the global goals (connection)
- My responsibility to move others to take action (responsibility)
We are hard at work in the 6th week of our Exhibition. Students have been working on their newspaper articles to help consolidate their knowledge about their issue. They have also been surveying and interviewing people to help complete their MISO research and further their knowledge. Some students have already planned how they will take action over the next couple of weeks. If your child has not done that please speak with them to see if you can come up with some good ideas as a lot of action can be taken outside of school and at weekends.
Next week will be all about how they are going to express themselves. Over the weekend they need to ensure that they have completed their storyboard/plan for their art expression and be ready to get started next week. If they need any special materials, they should be collecting them at home to bring into school next week.
We will be holding 2 action days at school, one on Thursday May 18th and one on Thursday May 25th. More information will be given after the students have decided what action they will take.
MATHS
This week in maths we have continued to identify, describe, classify and visualize properties of circles using mathematical vocabulary. We have been inquiring into circumference, radius and diameter and how they are all connected and how we can use those properties. Y6 will also be looking at calculating and developing rules to find unknown angles within shapes, around a point and on a straight line.
