Yr6 Weekly Update - 02/24/17Where we are in Place and Time We are right into our new unit and we started with a trip to the Kowloon Walled City Park. We started by formulating questions to ask any of the former residents. I am sure you have heard some great stories from your child about the interviews they conducted and the information they acquired during the trip. We also took pictures and did some measurements for some follow up work at school later on. We inquired into the word heritage and how it is identified. The students have brought in items about their own heritage to discuss with their classmates. We then had a class discussion to decide based on a criteria we had created, if these items fit into our heritage criteria. Students have also done some research about different heritage sites around the world that they would like to become more knowledgeable about. We discovered that we have a very well travelled group of students who have been to many of the UNESCO heritage sites around the world. LITERACY We have started thinking and planning our Historical Narratives, where students will write from the perspective of a child living in the Kowloon Walled City. We have gathered information that we can now turn into some great imagery to use in our narratives. Students are going to focus on the, “Show don't Tell”, idea when writing by using similes, metaphors and descriptive language. We have continued to focus on the comprehension strategies of visualising and inferencing. Students will recognise how characters or people, facts and events are represented and can speculate about the author's choices to help us in our writing. MATHS For maths we are continuing with fractions and working on understanding the relationship and converting between fractions, decimals and percentages. Most students have completed the Lego challenge which required students to work collaboratively in a group and design a robot or an object and explain their mathematical thinking. Some classes have also begun to work on Shape and Space. Students had a chance to visualise two-dimensional representations of three-dimensional objects and then try to draw it. It was a lot trickier than they originally thought. Once they were able to figure out the first step in the process some students were able to extend themselves to draw more complex shapes.
