Yr6 Weekly Update – 02/10/17
Sharing the Planet
Happy New Year! We hope you had an enjoyable break!
This is our last week of this unit and students are busy finishing their science experiments, their renewable and nonrenewable research as well as completing a summative assessment to demonstrate all that they have learned in this unit.
Classes are working on a speech to discuss which one of their renewable and nonrenewable resources they think are best. Students will be using a variety of processes and strategies when speaking in order to help justify and explain their statements.
Students have been reflecting on their Stop, Start, Continue document that they should have been working on throughout the unit. We are hoping they have developed some good habits that will now continue even though the unit is finished.
This week the Y6’s also started their pre-assessment for their next unit which falls under the transdisciplinary theme of Where We are in Place and Time. Students were given the task of helping to set up a museum in Hong Kong. The question they were posed was, “If you wanted the museum to contain more of a reflection of Hong Kong, what would you suggest should be kept in the museum?” Students were then asked to write and draw with diagrams what they would put in the museum and justify their answers. We had a lot of really creative ideas that will now help us to guide our teaching.
MATHS
We are continuing our inquiry into fractions by looking at how we name parts of a whole, understanding the relationship and converting between common fractions, decimal fractions and percentages and understanding fractional parts.
LITERACY
We have continued to work on inferencing while reading texts and watching short video clips. It is important the students understand that they have to be able to justify their answers and give proof from the text or video to support their inferring ideas.
