Yr6 Curriculum Update - 29/11/19

Working together to achieve success for every child

The Year 6 Team

Welcome to the 7th edition of our Year 6 Curriculum Update!

Transdisciplinary Learning – It's all connected!

In Inquiry, Ms. Lau has been coming to the year 6 classrooms and teaching us about the research cycle. In the research cycle, there are 6 steps: define, locate, select, organize, present, and reflect.

In define stage, we learned how to formulate researchable questions for the topic we wish to research about. We also defined the key words and ideas for the research. Next is locate. In this stage, we think about where we might find the relevant information and which sources of information to use - primary or secondary. We have been learning how to use APA citing. This is to help us with crediting the sources and maintain academic honesty. Next is select.

The select stage is where you would select the information that is important to the topic and learn how to record it in your own words. Some classes have begun to research about KJS's heritage using the research cycle. Other classes have started their class inquiry into World War II - Japanese Occupation of Hong Kong and Japan and Italy forming a group with Germany.

In Reading, our teachers have continued reading aloud from the book “Music on the Bamboo Radio”. In Writing, we are also learning how to details and ideas to develop characters and settings in the narratives. Some classes have inquired about the literary devices such as personification, hyperbole, metaphor and learned how to use these devices to add clarity and emphasis. Other classes have learned about the parts of speech such as adverbs, adjectives, verbs and they have used them to help create vivid pictures in the readers' minds.

In Mandarin, Kids have been learning about the weather like rain, snow, sunny etc…. The have been practicing to talk about the weather like a real weather reporter. while doing this, a class is starting to do a role play about clothes and to top it off they're creating the clothing with newspaper. Some classes have also been doing presentations about the Weather for today, tomorrow and the day after tomorrow.  There are also some classes doing a lot of online work on google classroom

In Maths,We have been learning about how to calculate the mean, median, and mode of a group of numbers. Some classes have also started looking for the definition for those words. Other classes have been revising on their understanding of percentages using the hundred squares. We have been learning to strengthen connections between areas of our brain and strengthen the visual pathways. In order to understand fractions we have been using number lines and area models. We have been learning that maths can be visual and that we can also solve problems by visualizing/drawing, which follows the mathematical mindset: “maths is visual. It is important to represent a math problem in many ways.” Here is the link to learn more.

In Music, the classes have been sharing their music to other classes to get  positive and constructive feedback not all the classes have done the best music but it's nice for them to share their music style with the others and show what instruments they used.We have been working in groups of 6s and 5s to compose Music.

In PE, we have continued to learn more about athletics! In this unit we are mainly learning about jumping, throwing and running. We are aiming on beating our score, but now we are focusing on each and every part of the athletics unit. Most of us are starting to also record their data and scores while others are still practising.
