Yr5 Weekly Update – 05/12/17

Producers and consumers play interdependent roles in the economic system

UNIT OF INQUIRY

This is the new Central Idea.

This week we have started a new Unit of Inquiry. The students have been given several different skills lessons (such as woodwork, cutting card, macramé, coding and sewing) over the last few weeks and we hope they can apply these skills to enable them to produce a product to sell on market day. The market day will be on Wednesday 21st June. Parents will be invited in to school that day to see what will be sold to the rest of the school later. Please don’t start buying goods and other items yet as the full details will be explained to the students shortly. You can help by talking with your children about budgets and what products may be popular with the other students.

To help them to prepare for market day we had a mini market this week. The students produced some items to sell to Y4s. We have reflected on their experiences and discussed how to improve their product and how to sell it more effectively.

LANGUAGE

As part of our continuing work on narrative we have been looking at “Voice” in writing. Basically this means how we can show emotions and feelings in our writing.

Here are some examples of the splendid work being done in 5S can you spot the emotions?

“She turned beet red stammering without knowing what to say. She covered her face with her wood brown hair. Then she glanced quickly for an exit, and without saying another word she walked quickly away.”  Belle 5S

“His face was burning, he stormed outside fists clenched until his knuckles were white. Dashed out of the door, shouting and screaming at the top of his lungs, glaring at the people while they drove past, stomping on the floor.” Jillian 5S

We are continuing to improve our summarising skills by looking at key words and using different methods to tell a story in a shorter form. Please encourage the students to read on “Big Universe.” This is an excellent resource to develop reading at home.

MATHS

The students have been adding and subtracting decimals. To help this we looked at the increase in Hong Kong Taxi fares. This has helped us look at adding decimals and encouraged the students to look for patterns in number sequences. Over the next few weeks we will be looking at time. So it would really help if you had some discussions with your child concerning the 12/24 hour clock system.
