Yr5 Weekly Update - 03/31/17Central Idea: Humans continue to migrate for many reasonsUOI This week, the students have been reading various stories linked to our Unit of Inquiry and learning to empathize with the characters, affected by migration. This work on perspective primarily took the form of role play and a written activity: “Circle of Viewpoints.” It was interesting watching the students fall into and becoming their chosen characters! Literacy Continuing with our poetry theme, the children are becoming more skillful in their use of poetic devices such as rhythm, rhyme, alliteration, simile, metaphor and personification, and have used these successfully to write their own poems. During guided reading sessions, students have been reading different migration stories and then using clues in the text to infer how the characters feel. They have also been using their visualization skills and drawing the images they see in their heads when they read the words of different poets. Maths This week, students finished off their work on division, where they learnt to use both formal and informal methods of calculation. In addition to this, last weekend, students were asked to gather some data from home, about where their parents and grand-parents came from. Back in class, they sorted the data to come up with answers to these questions. They broke into smaller groups, tabulated their findings and represented their data in the form of bar charts, pictograms and bar charts. They were then asked to interpret their findings.
