Where We Are In Place and Time Central Idea: Humans continue to migrate for many reasons

 

UOI

We have been looking at why people migrate. The students have looked at the reasons and categorized them into PUSH and PULL groups. Ask your children to explain these reasons to you. We have been studying some migration stories and will read some great books about migration to support their learning.

 

REPEAT REQUEST FROM LAST WEEK, This would be a great time to share with your child your own (or a family member's) migration story.  If you do have an interesting migration story to tell and are feeling really brave, we would warmly welcome you to come in and share your narrative with your child's class.  Just send a message to the class teacher and a convenient time can be arranged.

 

Literacy

Poetry will continue to be a focus for us until the end of term. We've carried on reading and enjoying a range of poems. The students have been looking at limericks and diamante poems. They have analysed the structure of these poems and had a go at writing their own versions. how authors might use these to affect the reader. Some students have looked at classic poem entitled, “Jaberwocky.” This was written by Lewis Carroll around 1871. We tried to re write it with a more modern outlook. There were some brilliant re writes!

Please try encouraging your child to find examples of poems and to try reading them aloud at home.  Here is a link with loads of cool examples of fun poetry,

Maths

After the excitement of Maths week we thought we would get back to normal. However, that didn't happen! We were lucky enough to listen to a visiting author called David Schwartz. He writes books about Maths, or as he says Math! We had some great examples of how we can do some fun Maths with animal facts about fleas and frogs and had a great visualization of a million kernels of popcorn.

Back in class we have been working on division using different methods of calculation.

In addition, we have spent a session exploring different strategies for dividing numbers. Please see the links to help below.

Homelearning:

  • 20 minutes of daily reading

  • Continue to use MyMaths to review division facts.

  • Poet of the day: As part of this poetry unit we would like each student to have an opportunity to read and recite a poem in front of their peers. Each child can sign up to be the “Poet of the Day”. They will be responsible to either write an original poem or find a poem that they enjoy to read aloud to the class.
