Yr5 Curriculum Update - 29/11/19Working together to achieve success for every childWritten by Chloe Chun, Jacob Wong, Kobe Wong, Sophia Naveed, and Aryana Budhrani. Unit of Inquiry Sharing the Planet Central Idea Biodiversity is dynamic and dependent on various factors. Lines of Inquiry
We are coming to the end of Sharing the Planet and have been expanding our knowledge on biodiversity even further. We have been starting to make our own information reports on our chosen area of biodiversity whether it is an animal or an ecosystem. We have been learning about the Global Goals and have chosen a goal that connects with biodiversity looking at taking ACTION. Some of us are doing it at school, which is Direct Action, some are doing it by asking people to do which is indirect or by a poster, video or slideshow, which is advocacy. There are 4 types of action direct, indirect and advocacy and research. We have also been discussing the “bee problem” in our playground. If you don't know what the “bee problem” is, let me give you an inside look. The gigantic tree next to the climbing frame houses a bee's nest. We are currently deciding what to do with it, but we have a problem. Firstly, the nest is literally inside the tree, so we can't move the nest. Secondly, if we kill the bees, there's another argument saying that doing this will harm biodiversity. Thirdly, if we just leave it there, then any curious children might wander too close to the nest and get stung. We are exploring more about the possible options for how we can solve this problem. We are doing action research. We continue to use our strategy, knowledge to solve equations with decimals, focusing on real world maths contexts. We are looking at how maths is connected, for example repeated addition and multiplication and multiplication and division. Students are encouraged to be creative and use their fine motor skills to junk model. To enable students to do this, please help us by sending in any cardboard boxes, plastic containers or anything that could be used for junk modelling. Please ensure any containers are thoroughly washed. We appreciate your support.
