Yr5 Curriculum Update - 18/10/19

Working together to achieve success for every child

Written by Chloe Chun, Jacob Wong, Kobe Wong, Sophia Naveed, and Aryana Budhrani.

Dear Parents,

We hope you all had a nice half term break.  We have begun a new unit of inquiry.  We are all very excited about Sharing the Planet, and learning about biodiversity.

Unit of Inquiry

Sharing the Planet

Central Idea

Biodiversity is dynamic and dependent on various factors.

Lines of Inquiry

  • the benefits of biodiversity (connection)

  • factors that influence biodiversity (causation)

  • our responsibility to biodiversity (responsibility)

Before half term we finished How the World Works by doing personal inquiries where we did our own experiments and recorded our results. The “Scientific Think Planner” helped us record and plan our science experiments. We did different experiments that tested our hypotheses which we used our knowledge of states of matter to formulate.  Many of our experiments used liquids so we had to be very careful to measure our liquids carefully to make sure we were doing fair testing.  We also had to time lots of our experiments so were using stop watches to compare the times. In 5M, some of us needed fire for our experiments which was really interesting to watch what happened. We will share some of our evidence on Evidencer in the next week.

We have begun to tune into Biodiversity.  We have been sharing what we already know about Biodiversity. We have been thinking about what we already know and written our own definitions (Biodiversity is when there is a lot of nature like plants, animals and insects, sort of like a garden), our own examples (Flowers, bees, dogs, etc.), and our own NON-examples (Candy, white boards and pens).  Mr Melsom came into school to talk to us about Biodiversity and share all the things we can do to help.  We are looking forward to going to Lantau to learn more.

In Maths, we are continuing to do a variety of decimal problems.  We have learnt how to order decimal numbers accurately and now we are starting to advance into adding and subtracting decimals using our knowledge of place value.
