Yr4 Curriculum Update – 09/02/18

Working together to achieve success for every child

Dear Parents,

What an unusual situation we find ourselves in!

Below you will find learning options for your child for the next week. We are aware that there will be a wide range of home situations for our students, some will have access to technology, play equipment, the kitchen and adult help and others will not have this access or support. We are also aware some families have taken advantage of the closure to extend their Chinese New Year holiday. Considering these variables we have created a range of learning experiences your child can choose from which provide opportunity for reading, writing, maths hands on challenges, continuation of units of inquiry together with physical activity. Please support your child to take up the challenges and continue with their learning during this closure.

Please also reassure your child we will be continuing with book week activities (28th February and 1st March) and our Chinese New Year celebrations (2nd March).

We do hope you and your children stay well and that you can make the most of this break from formal schooling.

During the last two weeks we have begun our new unit for How We Express Ourselves inquiring into how nature inspires creative expression. We have explored the creative process artists use when making their art and linked it to the process we use when we are writing. Our trip to Pak Tam Chung provided us with lots of inspiration for sketching and sculptures. Students have been introduced to various elements of art such as color, shape and line. They will use these aspects to create their own abstract piece and focus on how different people can view art in different ways.

In language we have been looking at a range of styles of  poetry for example Haiku, list poems, calligram and shape poems. We have been looking at the structure of the poems we have been reading and using that structure to create our own poems. We have focused on generating ideas and considering word choice. The children have been an audience for each others poems and have provided feedback to each other as part of the writing process.

In reading we have made links with writing by reading poems and inferring the meaning. We have been using our background knowledge and clues in the text to infer the intended meaning of the poet.

In Maths we have continued our focus on fractions. Students have looked at how to create fractions as well as how to find equivalent fractions. We will continue to focus on placing fractions on a number line in addition to looking at mixed and improper fractions.

We have continued to work with Mrs Tucker exploring how nature inspires dance. Students have worked collaboratively to create dances inspired by different landscapes and then this week by birds. We particularly enjoyed their flamingo dances!

A date for your diaries:

School starts back on Tuesday 27th February. We hope you all have a wonderful New Year holiday and look forward to seeing the children fit and well!

We were inspired by the art of Andy Goldsworthy and created our own natural sculpture.
