Yr1 Weekly Update – 05/26/17

 

 People’s choices can help or hurt the Earth

Unit of Inquiry

This is the final week of our Sharing the Planet inquiry and so we have been working on our summative assessments.

We have learned about some of the ways that people’s actions can hurt the Earth, and we have looked at how we can take action to help the Earth.

For our summative assessment, we have look at different ways people around the world are taking action.  By changing the materials of every day, common household objects to something that is more environmentally friendly they are helping the Earth.  We learned about people who are making toothbrushes from bamboo instead of plastic!

We came up with some of our own ways to change every day items and make them more environmentally friendly.

Talking points:  Ask them to tell you some of the things they have learned over the course of the inquiry about the different ways that people can help or hurt the Earth.  How do they plan to continue to help the Earth?  What small things can they do?

Questions: What is waste? Where does waste come from? What do we do with waste? What goes into the rubbish? Why is it rubbish? How is rubbish disposed of? How does waste get into the ocean?  What happens when it gets there?  How can we stop this?  What can we do to help?

 

Literacy

We continue to explore phonics in class through a variety of games, direct instruction and reading.

We have continued to explore explanation writing and how we can add more information to our writing.  We have looked at how we need to organise our writing to make it easy to understand.

 

Maths

We are continuing to explore addition and subtraction this week.  We have been looking at word problems that do not include numbers and working out how we can answer them.

We have been investigating the different strategies that we can use to help use to work the answer out – number lines, cubes and counters (manipulatives), our fingers, mental maths strategies, tens frames etc.

Talking points:  Using the different language of addition and subtraction – add, plus, more, altogether, take away, subtract, minus, what is left?

HATS, SUNSCREAN AND BUG SPRAY EVERY DAY!

 

Dentist visits

Dentist visits begin this week and continue over the next few weeks.  On the day of your child’s visit they need to bring their toothbrush and dental booklet to school.  The dental booklet will be returned at the end of the day.

 

BEACH CLEAN UP!  Monday, 5th June

Next Monday we will go for our trip to clean up the beach.  Please remember on that day:

  1. Packed lunch and snack (Deli fresh will be cancelled)
  2. Water bottles (disposable ONLY! We are considering our waste and it’s impact)
  3. Sunscreen and bug spray applied BEFORE coming to school
  4. HATS! This is essential as we will be outside for most of the day.
