Yr1 Curriculum Update – 21/09/18
Working together to achieve success for every child
Greetings! – It’s our 3rd edition!
We write a regular newsletter keeping you up-to-date and informed about your child’s learning. This will provide you with a good understanding of happenings in Year 1 and how you can support these learning experiences.
Let’s Inquire – Who We Are
We have continued to focus on the skills of cooperation such as, turn taking, planning for play and developing the communication skills necessary for working together. The students have begun to collaborating on a large art installation, inspired by the book, The Dot, by Peter H. Reynolds. Children used their creativity and imagination to produce their own dot artwork. They planned what they wanted to do and used paints to bring their ideas to life. We all found the painting extremely relaxing so I’m sure it impacted positively on our well being.
‘Success for Every Child – AAROW
Achievement: What are we achieving? The skill of cooperation has been present into all learning engagements and the students are demonstrating that they can co operate and collaborate successfully. Their independence has increased when managing and structuring their time throughout the day.
Agency: What agentic opportunities have we had? The students have been choosing who to work with and where to work, they have been exploring our Year 1 shared area and extending their learning in lots of different directions!
Respect: How are we developing a respectful community? We have continued discussing what respect looks like, sounds like and feels like. We have extended these ideas across into our shared spaces to ensure our interactions remains positive and the environment is cared for properly.
Opportunity: What opportunities have we had? The children have had the opportunity to explore many different learning engagements, to interact with new and familiar faces and work alongside other Year 1 teachers.
Well being: How are we developing a positive sense of well being? We have continued to focus on well being holistically. Having mindful moments, appreciating physical activity and discussing how a each individual’s well being can be supported in same and different ways.
Mandarin
In the “Who We Are” unit, the Year 1 children continues to inquire into working successfully with each other and how their choices can affect others. Connections to learning are made using Chinese songs, rhymes, games and stories. In addition, the children also learned about the mid-autumn festival. Some enjoyed making lanterns while others enjoyed listening to the mid-autumn legends. Have a happy mid-autumn festival!
