Yr1 Curriculum Update -13/12/19

Working together to achieve success for every child

Welcome to Year One

Transdisciplinary learning-it's all connected

Tis the season to be jolly!  It has been a very festive few weeks in Year 1 with many little elves making decorations for their Christmas tree.  Not to mention a castle for our friendly 1C Elf on the shelf. We have also been writing letters to Santa and being very sustainable making our own Christmas trees from cardboard or tree branches.

Language

We are well under way with our phonics groups and the children have been using their new skills like sounding out words when writing their letters to Santa. Some of us have been inspired by The Jolly Christmas Postman to write letters and Christmas cards and post them in our class mailboxes.  This work has helped them understand the postal system. We have also been listening carefully and following instructions to make menus, and making very detailed drawings.

Party day was a roaring success filled with crafts, singing, dancing and party snacks.

Mathematics

We have been enjoying our measurement unit in mathematics.  We have been using all kinds of non-standard units of measurements when ordering objects from smallest to biggest and measuring length.  We have also started to look at standard units like scales when weighing objects.  Students in 1M used the scales to look at how different objects have different mass…. We discovered that some of them even weigh more even though they look smaller than the other object!

How you can help at home

We would love you to think ‘how can I be sustainable this Christmas?'

  • Could you wrap your presents in children's homemade paper, decorated by them?

  • What about saving the fronts of your Christmas card and any used wrapping paper and bring it to school for our ‘Maker' area.

  • Perhaps think ‘green' and buy locally made gifts this year.

  • Lower the impact of holiday lighting.

  • Make homemade Christmas cards, your children are very crafty

  • Bake some treats and give them as a gift instead of store bought ones

  • Recycle your Christmas crackers

  • Minimise food waste. Try Jamie Oliver's recipe for leftover turkey pie
