The weather is getting warmer (and wetter!) and the learning is heating up as children really begin to excel and achieve their 2017/18 learning goals. Y6 are into their PYPX (Exhibition) mode, other year groups have exciting learning planned to ensure our final eight weeks is successful, and additionally we have a wide range of extra curricular activities coming up that many children are involved in. To continue our maths theme, this week we are looking at collaborative learning in maths. So why would we encourage collaborative learning in maths as opposed to independent silent learning? The bottom line is when children work on problems and challenges collaboratively they achieve better results and their learning is improved. There still will be times when children undertake independent learning as part of their maths, however ‘best practice' for us at KJS is to have maths learning include collaborative problem solving. This week we have two links for you. One provides some specific benefits for collaborative learning and the other is a video clip with children talking about how they feel about collaborative vs independent silent learning. Please, have a look and if you have questions or comments we would love to hear from you! Kind Regards 亲切的问候, सधन्यवाद Neill O'Reilly Principal Rainy SeasonAs we enter the rainy season we ask you send your child to school with the uniform raincoat as we will still have the children playing outside when there is light drizzle, they really do need the movement and change in space that outside play and lunchtimes provides. Year 5 Market dayAt the Year 5 Market Day on Friday June 22, students will sell the products or services they have created in their teams over the course of the previous 3 weeks. They will use their maker skills as well as what they have learned about advertising. This will be an opportunity for parents to visit a pre-sale “trade fair” with the main sale to follow. Battle of the BooksThe Battle of the Books team competed in the semi- final at Kennedy school on Thursday 3 May. They demonstrated superb collaboration on stage, conferring and checking answers with each other. The audience was very impressed. Each member of the team has read twenty books over the course of the year, some of them quite challenging. A great achievement in itself! Well done team you did yourselves proud, coming in a very close second. Thank you to all the parents who came along to support. It was much appreciated. Thank you to the team Chiraq, Anahita, Anabelle, Narelle, Hailey, Anushri, Rosie, Dhriti, Charlotte, Bhavika and Ishaan. (Abigail couldn't make it, she was not well) Thank you to all the children who have been part of the Battle of the Books club this year. It has been great fun and so many of you have read so many books. You can all be proud of yourselves. PTA Update |
