Principal’s Message
I hope this newsletter finds you well and that you are finally enjoying some warm and sunny weather.
Last week, our Student Council had the opportunity to visit Feeding Hong Kong. After their visit they prepared and delivered two assemblies on Monday to raise awareness and inspire action among our school community.
Feeding Hong Kong’s mission is to reduce food waste and feed charities. The assembly was informative and enlightening, encouraging us to be more conscious of the types of foods we purchase and minimise waste. See further information regarding this below. I am incredibly proud of our Student Council for their dedication to making a positive impact.
Across this week our Year Two students had a wonderful trip to the Museum of Modern Art. It was an enriching experience for them to explore different forms of art and culture. We appreciate the support from our families in making this trip possible.
Some exciting news! New play equipment has been introduced into our school playground this week. We have invested a significant amount in this equipment to provide our children with a fun and engaging play environment. We encourage our students to make the most of these new additions and enjoy their playtime and to do so in a kind and respectful way.

Student Council Food Drive
Dear KJS Community,
We are the KJS Student Council and we recently visited Feeding Hong Kong, a food bank that is an accredited member of The Global Food Banking Network.
We were inspired by their work, collecting surplus stock from food companies, sorting and storing it, and redistributing it to multiple charities across the city.
Feeding HK is a registered charity that started its work in 2011. They aim to educate people about issues related to hunger and food waste. They also carry out many donation activities, such as food drives and bread runs.
Currently, more than 800,000 people are living below the poverty line in Hong Kong and are struggling to access nutritious food to eat. In addition, 30% of all waste in Hong Kong is food waste. This is a BIG problem!
To support their wonderful work we have organised a food drive across our KJS community! Please see our assembly slideshow for more details and information.
We will be placing boxes outside the school office to collect food items. Students can bring in items from Wednesday, 31st January to Thursday, 8th February.
The suggested items to donate are below:
- Packets of rice, pasta and noodles
- Cup noodles
- Hot beverages (tea and coffee)
- Cans of fruits, vegetables and soup
- UHT milk
- Cooking oil
Please make sure the food items are labelled and are within their expiration date. We also ask that anything bottled such as cooking oil is in a plastic bottle and NOT glass to avoid any breakages.
We would like to thank you in advance for taking part in this food drive! We look forward to receiving your donations!

Technology Survey
Dear Parents,
As a valued member of our school community, we greatly appreciate your ongoing support and involvement in your child’s education. We are constantly striving to enhance our educational programs and provide the best learning environment for our students. To that end, we are excited to announce that we will be conducting a Technology Survey among parents. This survey aims to gather valuable data and insights regarding parents’ perceptions of technology in our school.
We kindly request your participation in this survey before the Chinese New Year holiday (8th February), as your feedback will contribute to shaping the future of technology implementation at our school.

Chinese New Year Celebrations
Dear KJS families,
xīn nián kuài lè
As Chinese New Year approaches, we wanted to let you know that children are invited to wear traditional Chinese clothing or anything red to school on Thursday, February 8th. If they do not have red or Chinese clothing please send them to school in their regular KJS uniform.
Our Chinese New Year celebrations that week will consist of a whole school assembly, a performance from a local Lion Dance troupe and of course all of the ongoing cultural celebrations taking place during Mandarin lessons. We will be sure to get photos and videos uploaded to our KJS community Facebook page.

Emotional Regulation
Have you noticed why children sometimes have difficulty managing their emotions when they are upset or anxious? It’s common for babies to cry, toddlers to tantrum and occasionally for primary school students to explode like a ferocious volcano. This is how they communicate their feelings and needs when feeling stressed.. Even as grown ups, we at times will verbally express our discontent when we are exasperated when things don’t go according to our plan.
Feeling discombobulated can make us feel helpless as our strong emotions get the best of us. Anger, frustration, sadness and anxiety are some of the powerful emotions that everyone experiences from time to time when faced with challenging situations. Our intense emotions not only affect how we function throughout the course of the day but our perception and understanding of the situation we’re facing. These emotions serve as an important barometer of our internal states and how to best respond to a situation. For children, this can affect how they feel about being at school, dealing with friends and most of all, their sense of selves.
This presentation will focus on how emotions play a significant role in our daily lives and its primary function in regulating one’s emotional state. A quick overview of Zone of Regulation also will be presented to help parents understand how we can help them develop age appropriate skills in making decisions by acknowledging and managing their emotions.

News from the PTA
KJS PTA Annual School Fair
Hello everyone!
Just 6 weeks to go to the biggest event on the PTA Calendar and we are really getting excited. The behind the scenes planning is well underway and there are so many wonderful ideas taking shape. It’s going to be FUN for the whole family!
Don’t forget, the theme is KJS Over the years, so all Community members who attended KJS are most welcome to come and be a proud part of the history of the school.
There will be no entrance fee and this is a whole family event.
But events like this need help from the entire Community, so please give us your support in the following ways:
– VOLUNTEERS – Just 30 minutes of your time would mean the world to us. Our aim is to have at least 150 volunteers for the event – please SIGN UP NOW to make sure for the event to happen! Volunteers will receive game vouchers (valued at $100 ) to be used at the fair as a token of appreciation.
– FOOD DONATIONS – Share your favourite homemade dish or purchase food for our Parent’s Food Corner and bring it on the day of the Fair.
– UNUSED NEW TOYS OR NON-FOOD ITEMS – We’d love to sell them at our PTA stall or use them as prizes for games. To be collected at the PTA office.
Please take a moment to fill out this form to Volunteer & Donate items. Remember, the more the merrier. Your contribution is truly invaluable!
MARKET VENDORS – If you have a business or are involved in any commercial activity, we would love for you to consider having a stall at the fair. And if you know someone who might be interested, please share this opportunity with them, register here. Showcase your business or spread the word to anyone who might be interested in having a stall.

Student Success
Thank you for sharing your child’s achievements with us over the past year.
While individual achievements are undoubtedly significant and provide a source of pride for both the student and their family, sharing every student’s accomplishments on our social media channels is no longer feasible. Our intention is to create an inclusive environment where all students, regardless of their individual accomplishments, feel valued and celebrated.
That being said, we encourage you to share your child’s achievements with their teacher and peers, as well as within your personal social media networks. This way, your child’s accomplishments can be recognized and celebrated by those who know them best.
We appreciate your understanding and support as we continue to navigate the post-pandemic educational landscape. Our school community’s strength lies in our collective efforts to celebrate the diverse talents, achievements, and experiences of all our students.
