Unit of Inquiry
Sharing the Planet
Central Idea
Biodiversity is dynamic and dependent on various factors.
Lines of Inquiry
- the benefits of biodiversity (connection)
- factors that influence biodiversity (causation)
- our responsibility to biodiversity (responsibility
In the past few weeks, we have continued to learn about biodiversity. We have been researching to make our own biodiversity presentations and also have been using websites such as www.thekidshouldseethis.com video website, Brainpop Jr, and Epic books to record our information using Cornell Notes. We have been learning to use Google Sites as a way to store our information in an organised way. All classes have now been on a trip to Mui Wo to have a look at how we are affecting biodiversity in Hong Kong. We sowed “rattlebox” seeds, and we also did a tree hunt, which involved looking for trees and learning about them. On our way, some classes encountered water buffaloes and egrets. It is good that we learnt about biodiversity because if we help by sowing seeds and picking up litter, we will help save biodiversity. Mr Melsom also gave us a chance to try and ‘play’ with the fire beater (a fire beater is when there is a small fire, you can put it out easily.)
We have begun our own personal inquiries into parts of biodiversity that we are interested in. We are looking at the Global Goals and thinking about which goal links to biodiversity and how we might be able to take action to help.
In maths, we have been continuing our decimal problems with a assorted variety of problems about decimal examples in real life. We have been focusing on using different strategies such as number lines, place value partitioning and bridging through/to 10 to help us.
