Happy Book Week!

It’s our 13th edition!

We write a regular newsletter keeping you up-to-date and informed about your child’s learning. This will provide you with a good understanding of happenings in Year 1 and how you can support these learning experiences.

Let’s Inquire – How We Express Ourselves 

We have come to the end of our inquiry into how ‘imagination can be expressed in different ways’.

This week we have been working on our summative assessments which included making story and picture books, songs, digital stories, acting, making puppets and telling stories we have made to our buddies.

First, we took a story that we know well and used our imaginations to change some of the details, like the characters and settings.  Next, we created a story map of what would happen in the story.  After we created books with words and pictures to tell our story.  Finally, we created different ways to retell our story.  We have made videos and used an app called “Toontastic” to help us.

We have shared our stories with our classmates, parent helpers and Y6 buddies.

 

Mathematics

In mathematics we have started to inquire into adding two groups together.  We started with a problem about pencils that really made us think.  We have continued to explore a variety of maths word problems.  We have shared our ideas, with friends and the wider class working collaboratively and independently.  By sharing our ideas we are learning from each other and seeing new ways of showing learning.  We have thought about how we can show our work so that it is neat and other people can understand it.

We have explored the book “10 is a crab” and will use this as a basis for further exploration into the concept of addition.

1W also went to help their Y6 buddy class to inquire into measurement.  We are not very sure what they needed our measurements for, but we are very excited to see what happens!

 

Mandarin

Year 1 children continues to inquire into Chinese learning through stories and rhymes and how Chinese characters are formed. Connections to learning are also made through songs, rhymes and games.
